IN THE DESIGN STUDIO WITH NATALIA
Hand Drawn By: Natalia, a fresh collection featuring hand drawn prints by VRG GRL’s Creative Director. Step behind the scenes and into the mind of Natalia, as she shares her thoughts and inspirations behind our recent collection.

What was the inspiration behind your collection?

There is no one place I drew inspiration for this collection. Vintage books, homewares and fashion are all among the places I look to first. I was recently gifted a tattoo gun and some of the motifs like the horse and birds were actually tattoo ideas. I reinterpreted other elements from a 1920’s art deco vintage book I had at home.

The colour palette of the collection is so bright, where did this stem from?

I don't restrict myself to any colour ‘rules’ or think that there is any right or wrong when mixing colours. I wanted this collection to be fun and playful, almost childlike. A lot of the colours actually were inspired from my son’s pack of coloured pencils that I used when drawing.

How would you describe your personal artistic style?

Definitely chaotic and colourful. A table sprawling of fabric swatches, trims and colours is when I feel like I create my best ideas. I feel most inspired when my environment is chaotic.

Tell us a little bit about the fashion design process?

After drawing my sketches, I worked with our designers to select the best silhouettes. This collection is made to be layered, so I chose an array of core VRG GRL shapes, mixed with some new silhouettes to mix and match.

What are some key pieces from the collection?

The Natalia Linen Shirt is a favourite because we’ve added special bead detailing to the flowers, and birds in different colours. The star print is also particularly unique as no two star shapes are the same.

However most of all I adore the Freja Satin Maxi Dress. I designed this in the silhouette of my dream vintage dress.
